Because you’re on the hunt for a new job, you’ve revamped your LinkedIn profile. You updated your resume, added relevant media, and made several new connections.

And still… you’re not getting noticed.

LinkedIn is a great resource, but you have to find ways to stand out from the crowd of nearly 430 million people. Learning how to utilize LinkedIn groups is one major way jumpstart your job search. Here’s how!

Find Relevant LinkedIn Groups

LinkedIn allows each of its members to join up to 50 groups. While 50 sounds like a lot, don’t go overboard. It is important to join only groups that are relevant to your job search. Find the perfect groups for you by selecting “groups” in the dropdown menu beside the search bar. From there, you can search by skill, industry, hobby, or keyword. Join groups based on your experience or goals, or join broader groups like “Job Seeker’s Premium”.

There are specific groups for job seekers, and groups organized by profession. Recruiters will often join groups specific to the position they are trying to fill. By doing so, they can find people within their industry who are not already in their network.

Join Discussions

Once you’ve found groups that interest you, take part in discussions happening within them. LinkedIn has recently made some major changes to groups, making them a much better networking tool. Each member request must now be approved by group creators, discussions are monitored for a better experience, and members can tag other members using the “@” capability to keep conversations going.

Taking part in discussions is a great way to get noticed by recruiters. They will see how you communicate and collaborate with other people and get a preview of your ideas before even meeting you.

View Job Postings

Many groups have job board tabs where recruiters can post. Oftentimes, companies will post job openings on these boards rather than doing so publicly. When you apply through those postings, they will know that you are already a good candidate for them. By frequently checking the job postings within your groups, you will see jobs long before those on the outside.

Make Connections

Become familiar with the companies and recruiters who frequently post in your groups. Those companies are the ones you should be appealing to. If they post articles, comment on them or share them to your wall. Get your name out there and show them that you are interested in what they do.

Go a step further and make connections with employees at those companies. Find out what skills and experience they list on their profiles and make adjustments to your own where you can.

LinkedIn groups are a great way to get noticed by recruiters, as well as a resource for networking with others in your industry. Knowing how to find the best groups for you and how to utilize those groups will be a huge improvement to your job search.
