Yes, we are the gatekeepers. And chances are high that most recruiters know someone that can connect you to someone that will help you get that dream job.
Before we help YOU though, we want you to know we need for you to help yourself FIRST!
Maybe you’ve never had to network to pay the bills. Maybe you don’t know how this game works. That’s okay. Don’t get frustrated. Stay positive and open-minded. I am going to let you know where to start in your search.
And believe it or not, job search does NOT with the recruiter. Before you talk to a recruiter. You have to know, really know, what you want.
In fact, my biggest pet peeve is when someone expects me, as a recruiter, to help them… who isn’t ready to help themselves.
Let me give you an example. A candidate says to me: “I need a job”. I say “Okay, let’s talk. What do you want to do?”. The candidate replies “I don’t really know” or “I’ll take anything.”
Do you know how frustrating that is to a recruiter? Even more frustrating: the recruiter is then vilified for not helping the job seeker. We’re the bad guy!
You may laugh at this scenario, but it happens every day. We have all been told, “You never called me back” or “I never got a response from you”. Why is this the recruiter’s fault?
Ladies and gentlemen, there is a reason why you never got called back. Take a good look in the mirror. The blame falls on YOU, not the recruiter.
Before you ask me to help you, I want you to do me a favor! Do your homework. Know something about the role and something about what you want to do before reaching out to recruiters. We are not a mind readers and we don’t know what you don’t tell us. Connect with us for a reason or a purpose! We will gladly help. And, yes, we are easy to reach on social media and LinkedIn. But PLEASE don’t ask to connect with us until you have a specific goal in mind!
The next time you say you need a job, be specific. At a minimum, know this:
- The role you want to find, right down to the job title
- How your skills and experience make you a good fit for that role
- What you need to work on, and which skills you are still developing, to excel at that role
- The kind of company you want to work for (build a list!)
- The kind of culture that might be the best fit for you
Yes, you must be THAT specific!
When you do this, recruiters will be more than ready to help you. We can help you polish your selling skills. We can introduce to employers hiring right now. And we can teach you more about networking than you ever thought possible.
Help yourself first. Do the work. And see how recruiters can be the bridge that helps you get your next job!
