In the midst of preparing a plan for my life and career journey, I knew I needed a mentor. Someone who held high-level positions in the PR industry, to advise me on higher education, skill-development and to assist me in properly planning my career.
But what should one look for in a mentor?
The best mentor is someone who provides professional knowledge and expertise about the career field, and answers questions about a job and/or education. A mentor can go as far as helping the mentee see past a specific problem or job issue and forms a clear vision to help achieve their career goals.
The first step in finding the right mentor is realizing who you are and what you aspire to become. You will also see there are many types of mentors such as one within your current profession, or a mentor within an affiliation, such as PRSSA. My suggestion is to seek out all mentoring possibilities! Life can have its crazy moments and we all need someone who can help us stay on track.
From my experience, an outstanding mentor possesses 10 highly desirable qualities:
1. Motivates others by setting a good example
2. Has a positive attitude about life
3. Sets and attains professional and personal goals
4. Is captivated by the industry in which they work
5. Is a great listener
6. Builds their mentee up in a sincere way
7. Has a great reputation in the community and industry
8. Wants their mentee to succeed and helps them learn from mistakes
9. Creates opportunities and opens doors
10. Believes in their mentee
One of the many lessons I’ve learned, the hard way, is the people you surround yourself with work to shape the person you are and become. For that reason, it is very important to have only the best people in your life. You want people and mentors around you who are better than you are because it aids in career and self-growth. The law of attraction says, “like attracts like”. Therefore, if you aspire to be the best you will ONLY attract the best.
Do yourself favor: Choose wisely.
